Section 5: Falkirk to Linlithgow

Updated 3rd February 2021

The towpath between Brightons and Almond Road is currently undergoing construction works and is expected to re-open in March 2021.

Heavy rainfall caused a breach on the Union Canal at Muiravonside on 11th August 2020, requiring emergency closure of the towpath for a 2.4 mile stretch between Brightons (at Station Rd B810) and Almond Road.

A signed diversion route is now in place in both directions. See diversion map and detailed directions. Please follow yellow directional signs with a cycle icon and John Muir Way waymarker. The diversion is suitable for walkers and cyclists.

Scottish Canals are working to repair the canal embankment and will post updates on the rebuilding work on their website. The work is expected to last several months. We will update here when the towpath re-opens.
