One of Scotland’s Great Trails, the John Muir Way is the ideal way to experience the huge variety of central Scotland's scenery and culture. Fully waymarked for walkers and cyclists, it links Helensburgh in the west with Dunbar in the east – birthplace of ‘father of national parks’ John Muir.

Walking the Route

The John Muir Way is typically tackled in 10 days, although it can be easily broken up into shorter trips. Good access to public transport makes completing individual sections simple. Some parts are fairly flat, with the hillier terrain towards the west. If you're feeling energetic, a number of optional short climbs can be included for spectacular views.

Cycling the Route

The John Muir Way is a fantastic cycle route. It will usually take about 4 - 5 days depending on your temptation to linger and explore. We suggest using mountain, hybrid, gravel/adventure or sturdy touring bikes to tackle some of the steeper and bumpier sections.
