This section of the route follows a mixture of minor public roads, natural and built paths (the West Highland Way) and farm / forestry tracks.
On the cycle braid there is a relatively long section on minor road between Balloch and Croftamie. There are great views from the West Highland Way between Dumgoyne and Strathblane, though some sections are steep with a loose surface and it's very likely that cyclists will need to push in places. With planning this can be bypassed on public roads.
The walkers route has less distance on the road and also takes in the newly built path over the Kilpatrick Hills. Be aware that the new walkers route commits you to roughly 13km of 'upland' path which is relatively steep and challenging in a few places - walking poles are recommended on this section.
Public toilets are located at Balloch Pier, Balloch bus station, the railway station, in the Co-operative and in Balloch Country Park.
Key things to note about this route section.
Fallen tree and flooding at Auchineden (Balloch to Strathblane section)
A section of the John Muir Way walking route between Balloch and Strathblane is currently affected by a fallen tree and related flooding after heavy rain. This is at NS517792 between Auchineden/Edenmill and Carbeth/A809. We are working with the landowner to have this cleared. It is possible to by-pass this section by taking the Auchineden access road to join the A809 and following the A809 to Carbeth, but this is a busy road without a pavement and cannot be recommended. The safe alternative is to follow the John Muir Way cycle route for the Balloch to Strathblane section. This leaves the main JMW to the east of Balloch and goes via Croftamie, Gartness and Dumgoyne (partly on the West Highland Way) to re-join the main JMW route at Carbeth.
